The 17th Annual Dubai Terry Fox Run to be held on February 25, 2011 for cancer research

On Friday February 25, 2011 at 9:30am, the 17th Annual Dubai Terry Fox Run will be held at Al Mamzar Park, bringing thousands of residents and visitors together for a fun-filled day in support of a good cause. The Dubai Terry Fox Run is a charity event in support of cancer research in the UAE and is held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, Chairman of Dubai Airports and Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group.

Registration for the 17th Dubai Terry Fox Run will start at 8:00am and the run will commence at 9:30am, following an 8.4km scenic route at Al Mamzar Park with activities, music and entertainment for the entire family. The casual, non-competitive run is open to everyone: adults, children, schools and corporate groups can choose to walk, run, bicycle, skateboard, scooter or rollerblade any desired length of the route. Refreshments will be provided along the run. Participation is free; however, donations are encouraged with 100% of all proceeds going towards UAE-based cancer research.
To date, The Dubai Terry Fox Run has raised more than AED 6.7 million for cancer research in the UAE since the first Dubai-based event in 1992. In 2009, the event attracted more than 5,000 participants and raised over AED 300,000. Now in its 17th year, the Dubai Terry Fox Run is one of the most established and most supported in the world.
“The Dubai Terry Fox Run is a wonderful way to spend a Friday morning while supporting an excellent cause,” says Dave Barette, Chairman of the organising committee. “The atmosphere on Run Day is fun and relaxed. This event is all about health, generosity, charity and bringing together an international mix of people, of all ages, all in support for cancer research. This year, the buzz for the Dubai Terry Fox Run has been more enthusiastic than ever. I encourage everyone to join us at Al Mamzar Park on February 25th for a great day out.”
The Terry Fox Run is the largest single day fundraiser for cancer research in the world and is celebrated in honour of Terry Fox, a young Canadian and cancer patient who began the ‘Marathon of Hope’ – his inspiring journey to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. With one leg amputated, Terry Fox became a national hero running for 143 days, completing 5,373 km (3,339 miles) before he passed in 1981. The Terry Fox Foundation was established that year to continue his legacy by hosting a run the same time every year. Since then the Terry Fox Foundation has raised over AED 1.8 billion through the Terry Fox runs around the world.
